There are many, but today let's talk about seven cultural items that are truly unique to Japan: kimono, tatami, origami, furoshiki, bento, sensu, and maneki neko.
The kimono is Japan's most famous traditional clothing. It is best described as a long robe with wide sleeves, tied with a wide belt called an obi. People used to wear kimono every day in the past, but today they are worn mostly for special occasions like weddings, tea ceremonies, and festivals. The colors and designs of kimono often show the season—cherry blossoms in spring or maple leaves in autumn. Making and wearing a kimono takes skill and care, and it shows Japan's sense of beauty and respect for tradition.
The second item unique to Japan is tatami, which are straw mats used to cover floors in Japanese homes. Tatami has a soft but firm feel and a special fresh smell. The size of rooms in Japan is often measured by how many tatami mats fit inside. Tatami gives a quiet, calm feeling to a room and helps people sit and sleep close to the floor.
